After reading the Abused!Draco posts a small exchange between Draco and 
Lucius caught my eye as I was re-reading the scene we seem to be focusing on in 
Borgin and Burkes. 

(pg 30, US hardback) Malfoy....said, "I thought you were going to buy me a 
present."   "I said I would buy you a racing broom," said his father.... 

If Lucius actually wanted his son to do better in school I don't think he 
should be buying Draco 'presents'.  When I was little and I wanted a toy or candy 
or something my mom would say 'Ok, but you have to do extra chores' or 'I'll 
think about it after I see your report card.'
