I'm glad I'm not the only one who found themselves not feeling too
sad when Sirius died. My pre-reading prediction was that it would be
Neville, and I was immensely relieved that it wasn't. (I wish we all
hadn't known someone was going to die in advance, it ruined some of
the surprise.) Even though Sirius was a major character, I never felt
very emotionally tied to him, even though Harry was. In the end, his
death affected me more through Harry's reaction to it. And pity for
Harry erased some of the negative feelings I had about him through
the book for his arrogance and rudeness to his friends.
I think from a plot perspective, Sirius's death makes sense. Harry's
had to deal with loss before, but this affects him much more. He was
too young to remember his parents, and while Cedric's death was
tragic, he and Cedric were never *close* friends. The loss of Sirius
contributes to Harry feeling more alone than ever and it forces him
to grow up even faster.
