 I've never really entered into any of the Snape discussions but I 
feel there is a misconception here that needs to be addressed. Harry 
did not learn that Snape and his father hated each other until the 
end of SS/PS. Dumbledore tells him this as a way of explaining the 
behavior that Snape has exhibited toward Harry throughout the book. 
Harry's first impresson of how Snape feels toward him is during the 
welcoming feast. He is then sure that Snape hates him after the 
first potions lesson. Harry's perceptions of the relationship are 
entirely Snapes responsibility.
