I don't know if you read the original post but I am not advocating,
nor are those folks that responded in kind to it, killing off the
annoying characters. I merely stated that I could not work up a
good cry for Sirius when he died. He was not a terribly
sympathetic character to me in this book. Whatever happened to
him in Azkaban, he escaped but his imprisonment doesn't seem
to have changed his basic character--he doens't seem to be very
reflective after his ordeals. He is something of an overgrown
schoolboy. Lupin has been through some rough times, but he is
reflective, he keeps his cool--he seems to have grown from his
experiences. The inability of Sirius to just wait for his moment
has hurt the Order--they lost one of their best, possibly.
Although, I found myself wondering if he truly did care about the
OoP, as he seems to be so wrapped up in his own problems. I
think he cares for Harry, but is it because he likes who Harry is or
because he misses James and see Harry as a possible
substitute for the loss of his friend? I think that question was
even raised in the book. Like ceylse218, I responded more to
Harry's reaction to the death of Sirius. And I also agree with the
others that posted about this, that Harry will grow up faster. Isn't
that one of the lessons we are supposedly here to learn: we are,
each of us, ultimately alone and must face
our fears alone? Harry is learning it a little faster than most and
the lesson just seems to hit home a little harder in each book.
Like others, one of my reactions was "thank god it wasn't
Neville." He is a very special character and one of whom I have
become very fond. I can't help but feel, however, that Neville is
destined to a hero's death. I hope not. I hope he comes into his
own, gets his own wand--not his father's--and does some great
stuff.
Pauletta.
