I think the lessons were significant and necessary in many ways.
First of all, the lessons happen to teach Harry how to defend himself
from attacks from V.

Now I'm entering speculation territory:
Since Harry has been less than forthcoming in the past regarding his
scar pains, the lessons could have been a covert way to see if
Voldemort was lurking and up to no good in the vaguist of ways. Is it
possible to anyone that the lessons could have also been a test to
see if Voldemort could get to Harry though someone like Snape.
Considering that V can summon his DE's though the darkmark, could V
just do a check-up now and then to see what his DE's are actually up
to.

To me, having someone in Snape's position is more dangerous to both
Harry and the Order then if DD taught Harry himself. Look, DD has
both years and experience on his side and on top of that, V fears him
( Though you can take that with whatever grain of salt you like).

Snape is a former follower of V who still has a connection of sorts
with He-who-must-not-be-named. As smart and talented Snape apparently
is, he does NOT have age and experience behind him. He is an
emotionally stunted man with anger issues involving Potters and
company. I'd say if V was tempted to check in on Snape during those
lessons, especially when Snape was furious, he would have an almost
immediate alternate root to Harry and access to any of the work that
Snape has done on behalf of the order from Snape's own head.

See, I believe that DD was just too busy to deal with Harry. But I
also think that Snape went to DD once he saw the Department of
Mysteries in Harry's head and told DD the wizarding equivalent
of "It's too late", to which DD replied " Just try one more time" and
ate enough lemon drops to put an elephant into a diabetic coma out of
anxiety.
