Draco/Harry "friendship"?

       I have two different theories regarding Draco's original 
overture of frienship to Harry.

      1. Lucius thought it would be a good idea to be in the good 
graces of the boy who lived and *encouraged* Draco to try to make 
friends.

      2. Draco wanted thye status that might go with being Harry's 
friend. Socially, quite a notch in his belt.
