Dumbledore`s silver instrument

HI, 

I have no idea if this has been talked about before, but has anybody 
got an idea or a theory, what Dumbledore`s silver smoke emitting 
instrument is. I`ve read the chapter where it´s mentioned a couple 
of times now, but I`m still not sure, what to think about it. 
I concluded then it may be some kind of divination instrument to 
understand the connection of different events.
