I agree that Lily probably liked James more than she let on. However,
at fifteen, James was a show off who was full of himself. It's quite
possible that Lily had a crush on him (just as James obviously had a
crush on Lily), but that she didn't like his bigheadedness. However,
when James got smart and got over himself, they started dating. It's
the only thing that seems to make sense. Otherwise, it would be like
Hermione suddenly deciding that dating Draco would be a good
idea...not very likely.
