The question still remains how James and Lily Potter amassed all that
gold at Gringotts.
John responds:
My bet is on an inheritance of some kind. James and/or Lily may have inherited it from their parents, since it sounds like they also spent a lot of time in hiding and weren't able to work the way Arthur Weasley seems to. I believe the gold (and Harry's ancestry) may prove to just be a plot device (Harry never has to worry about money when he needs something - a bit convenient, isn't it?) or it may play a larger role in a future book.
As others on this list have pointed out, it's a bit suspicious that Harry's only living relative is his aunt. No grandparents, on either side? James and Lily seemed to be relatively young when they were married and when Harry was born - his grandparents could have been as young as 50 - where are they, why are they gone? Was James an only child? What did James' parents do for a living? What about Lily's parents? Does Dudley know anything about his grandparents? Are they ashamed of them because they were proud of Lily? These are some important unanswered questions, questions that Harry himself hasn't even pondered. Will they be answered and reveal important details, or are they inconsequential? Only time will tell!
