My explanation for the perceived Thestral Mistakes. When all else
fails KISS Keep It Simple Stupid!
Although Lily died protecting a one year old Harry, the one year old
Harry did not see her die!

As I've seen from my several Nephews and nieces, one year-old
children spend a lot of time sleeping in their cribs sleeping.
Considering that Lily was protecting her son, I'm picturing a last
chance effort of Lily to save Harry by leading Voldemort away from
her son at the cost of her own life.

Ignoring the scene from the movie, pictu5re Lily trying to lead LV
away from Harry. She might Hide a sleeping baby away from the crib
and let herself be seen at a window escaping with a bundle of
clothes the size of a one year old. LV most likely cut her down with
Avada Kedavra, and discovering that the bundle was just a bundle
found Harry and tried to kill him. Th epoint is, Harry NEVER SAW
DEATH, and thus could not see the Thestrals his first four years at
Hogwarts.

Sound feasable?
