I think we finally have an answer to how Hagrid got to the Hut on the 
Rock in PS/SS - when he said that he "flew," he probably flew on a 
Thestral.  So I think they serve as a means of transport for Hagrid, 
since he can't Apparate.  

I also think their amazing sense of direction comes in handy for both 
Dumbledore and Hagrid.
