Its possible that the Longbottoms may or may not know something
important. Still, wasn't it said that the Longbottom's insanity was
permanant? Why would Voldemort have to risk going into St. Mungo's to
kill them unless they did still pose a threat of being cured? The
DE's could have done it easily when they did Bode. And, a-hem, sorry
to mention it, but did GILDEROY see anything? I wanna know!!! He may
have been a witness! I have a feeling we may find out whats going on
next book. Neville's mum might know something, because Rowling did
rather bring her into attention in this book a little, and she seemed
coherent enough to know who her son was.
I don't think we should jump to hasty conclusions about Snape, as you
said, until we know more facts, because Snape is a very convient
person to blame all Death Eater acts related to students. He happens
to be at Hogwarts, and knows the students, such as Neville, face to
face. But it could have been Lucius, or Voldemort himself, or
somebody else, or it may be nothing at all. Its all fits very well
though, and it WOULD explain why Snape is so nasty to Neville, wether
he wanted to hurt Neville's parents or he was forced to by the Death
Eaters, he would have to play the role of hating Neville as much as
Potter to placate ol' Voldy.
Just my thoughts anyways.. I hope Rowling does more with Gilderoy,
that'll be fun! :D
