Given how willing Dumbledore seems to be regarding the hiring of
part-humans (Hagrid, Flitwick, Firenze), I've often wondered if at
least part of the reason that Lupin resigned was that he hadn't told
Dumbledore about Sirius' animagus talent in the first place (not to
mention running off that night without taking his Wolfsbane potion). 

I'm not sure that the whole "Werewolf Teaching At Hogwarts!"
kerfluffle could have been overcome if parent/school governor
sentiment had run too much against him, but...if it could have been, I
suspect that Dumbledore would still have been *very* disappointed in
Lupin. Perhaps enough so that he'd ask him to resign for not having
placed the safety of the students above all other considerations.
