But 13-year-olds have at least one person who they trust and respect 
talking to them, for Snape there is nobody there worth listening to.
Maybe if Lupin offered to transform the rat in the first couple of 
seconds before Snape completely lost his marbles, he would stood a chance.

Yes, I agree. If Sirius just wrote a letter to Dumbledore, inviting him 
to have a closer look at Ron's pet, it would've been a much shorter 
book. :-) Or Lupin took a second to inform Dumbledore before running to 
meet Sirius. Actually, I'm getting more and more annoyed with Lupin.
Did you notice how he gives two different resignation stories to
Hagrid and Harry?
