Err, nope, actually the Chicago Cubs -did- win the World Series way back in
1908, with a team led by player-manager Frank Chance (part of the famous Tinker
to Evers to Chance double play combo) and the great left-handed pitcher
Mordeci "Three-finger" (AKA "Miner" he lost part of his hand in a mining accident)
Brown. Legend says that mangled hand could put unholy mojo on the ball.
The Cubbies were utterly dominant in the first decade of the 20th century,
but while they did make World Series appearances in the 30's and 40's (last one
in '45) they have been breaking the hearts of fans ever since.
*sigh*
All together now Cubbies fans "Just wait til next year."
And to turn this back to HP topicality, could the UK folks out there clue us
in as to any possible UK football anologue? I have vauge recollections of
Arsenal going through a similar long and agonizing championship drought, which was
broken not too long ago.
And what does it say about Ron that he is so passionately devoted to the
Cannons?
Loyalty? Stubborness? Just sheer cussedness?
Is it a family thing (I don't recall having seen signs that any of the other
brothers are quite so devoted) or did he latch onto them himself? And if so,
why?
Anyone have any thoughts?
(As a Cubs fan I've got to recuse myself citing an inability to remain
objective)
