There's another suggestion: that he has somewhere else to eat and
would rather spend as much time there as possible...
A Mrs Florence Snape and Severus Jr doesn't seem high on the list of
possibilities, but has to be considered. Also possible is that one
of the (presumable) parents seen in Snape's memories is still alive.
I can see Snape feeling that he'd much rather have dinner with his
dear old mum than with Sirius Black [grin].
In the first four books Snape is definitely at Hogwarts when Harry
stays for Christmas and Easter. In the fifth book, it's not certain.
His post Christmas visit to 12 Grimmauld Place could have been made
from Hogwarts; or if his secondary job is guarding Harry, he could
have taken the opportunity to have Christmas off this year [grin].
In other words, he could be staying at Hogwarts for holidays because
he feels he ought to, not because he wants to.
