I'm not at all surprised.  I suspect that JKR is responding to 
criticism that there is only one 'main' female character, and very 
few minor witches.

I also agree with the poster who thought Tonks and Luna were a nod 
to the fanfiction community, although I tend to think that Luna is a 
cameo, perhaps of a school friend of Rowlings, or maybe her sister, 
or her daughter?  Or her beloved dead mother, perhaps??

I would love to know if the friend of Rowlings' who provided the 
template for Harry had any contact with JKR's mother before she 
died.  A lot of the things Luna said to Harry seemed to me to have 
been lifted from RL - I got the feeling I was eavesdropping on a 
conversation JKR had overheard or had with a loved one.
