 I think the biggest factor in favor of the Thestrals
was the ability to take you to where you want to go
even if you yourself don't know the way. The kids know
it,s in london but I'm not sure they know how to
navigate there on a broom and the castle may be over
run with hitler youth ur um slytherins by now.

More important, the Threstrals being invisible to
Muggles (and 
most[?] Wizards who have not met with death [ie: There
is no 
Threstral detection/viewing spell/potion - Only having
been in the 
presence of some one dying gives the power to
subsequently see them]) 
make a much better form of stealthy transportation
than Broomsticks 
(even ignoring that the others could not have kept up
with Harry and 
his Firebolt).
