  I agree that there is something fishy about the gum, probably a 
poison of some sort as many other listees have surmised. Someone
(sorry,I lost track of who) commented that Snape would be needed if 
the wrappers were to be tested for some kind of potion. I submit 
that Fred and George may also be qualified- and they are certain to 
be more approachable from Harry and co.'s POV.

   BTW, while we're at St Mungo's, I had a thought on Bode's deadly 
Christmas gift. According to cannon, St Mungo's blamed the healer 
and dismissed her. IMO, in this case St Mungo's got it at least 
partially right. That healer had to know what she was putting at 
Bode's bedside. According to canon an E at NEWT level in herbology 
is required is required in order to study the healing arts. How 
could a healer NOT recognize a devils snare? Of course that does not 
mean she was the only one involved but that is another thread.
