actually, I don't think the Severus Snape/Perseus Evans thingy is shot down at all with the new info. I had noticed, along with a jillion other readers, the Snape/Evans anagram; but having seen no reinforcement to suggest anything else, I decided it was just a clever red herring. However, after reading OOP, I am questioning that. The introduction of Black's family tree showing the name Andromeda-the princeess saved by Perseus in the legend-combined with the already named Mark Evans, AND the memory Harry saw during his Occlumency lesson of the angrily screaming man and the sobbing small boy, now lead me to think it might indeed be a clue.
What if Severus' mother left his father and hid with Muggle relatives, where his name was Perseus Evans? The scene might be indicative of why sahe left OR of him finding them, before spiriting the child away (possibly-probably! never seeing his mummy again). Andromeda could be someone Severus prevented from being killed by the DEs, or will prevent it; his mother might have remarried into the Evans family and had stepdaughters-and recognized Lily's talents (thus Severus would not have been a "blood" relative. Or, alternatively, she could fave been Lily's aunt and seen it. Little Mark could be a relative-by-marriage as well.
Severus may have been told his mother died, or had aboandoned him (think of the Dursleys lies to Harry). His father could have been the one teaching the little Severus the curses.
It's not hard to guess that a father like that would have been difficult, maybe impossible, to please; and then when Severus was faced with people like the Marauders bullying him purely for pleasure (and maybe even a bit jealous of his abilities) that combination might have driven him to V. not because of shared beliefs but rather a place to be accepted.
I also think that the work Snape did/does as a spy might spring from loyalty to Dumbledore, who might be one of the few-perhaps only (aside from nhis mother) wo've shown him unconditional acceptance and real love.
After all, why exactly does DD put his faith in a man who although extremely able as a teacher, still plays favourites, is sadistic to his non-faves, abuses his power to a certain extent, etc. etc.? And why does such a person seem to have limits even he won't cross-protecting Harry during that Quidditch in the 1st book, rushing heedlessly off to confront someone he believes is a dangerous criminal in PoA when finding out the Trio is going to do the same (and insisting to Fudge that they were bewitched, "confounded" and therefore not responsible? He also had to learn Occlumency from someone-when DD tells Harry he (DD) should have given the lessons himself it sounds awfully like "I'm the only person that could have matched/outdone him in knowledge" (remember how both Sirius and Remus were so horrified when Harry told them about his Occlumency lessons being stopped and their insistence that nothing was more important? They clearly considered Prof. Snape to be a master at Occlumency).
Hmm, I rambled a bit past the original point, but not too much I think!
Anyway, I think that the whole Snape?P. Evans-M. Evans-Andromeda Black-childhood memory thing ought to be kept in mind.
Oh-and did anyone notice how, after Harry's memory of persecution and teasing by Dudders & Co, surfaced, that Snape actually asked him about it? Like, showed an interest in Harry almost like a regular person would have? I think that might have been a surpriseseeeing Harry not having been bben raised as the spoiled "Boy Who Lived" but rather as someone who might have had experiences similiar to his own. I think, too, that Snape's anger might not have come merely from Harry viewing that Pensieve memory but the fact that he showed some trust which Harry immediatly violated.
By the way, I can't find any middle or longer name for Severus Snape-if anyone does find one, plase post it! (Actually, please send me an email in case I miss the post.)
I would appreciate it -
