There is a thing called love out there and often times, it's out of control. 
Perhaps Tom's mother fell in love with this Muggle and had to stand up to her 
family (or get thrown out, which indicates why no one on her side took in 
Tommy-Mort) and then he ditched her.

This would indicate why Tommy-Mort hated his dad so much. His mom gives 
up her legacy for him and he ditches her?
