EXCEPT as in history time seems to be written by the victor. If you
reread your PoA you'll realize Harry and Hermione went back in time
to save Buckbeak, Sirius, and themselves! The deciding factor is
that Harry remembers seeing himself.
My silly idea... Hermione as she falls before the dementors makes a
subconcious decision to go back in time and save herself, after all
she was wearing the timeturner around her neck at the time.
It's probably better that she doesn't have it anymore. I could
picture Hermione in battle ala Bill & Ted's Adventure. "Oh here's LV
and all his deatheaters! If only the OOP could come to my rescue!
Wait a minute, I just need to remember to go back in time later and
tell them to show up here in about 5 seconds! 3,2,1 Oh here they are!
