My own thoughts on this:
James & Lily had narrowly escaped Voldemort three times.  Why was 
Voldemort so intent on catching them?  Add to that the fact that 
Voldemort didn't seem particularly interested in killing Lily when he 
finally caught up to them.  From this, it seems that Voldemort was 
after both Harry (because of the prophecy) and James (we don't know 
why).  Perhaps there is something about James (as of yet to be 
revealed) which made Voldemort absolutely sure that Harry was the one 
who had the power to stop him?
