We are told that only people who have seen death can see the 
thestrals.  We are not told that everyone who sees death can 
immediately see thestrals.  Those are two entirely different 
propositions.

So they changed the badges; some changes are bound to be made 
from time to time.

He had other things on his mind.  Besides, he still knows almost 
nothing about his parents; the grandparents can wait till later.

Why should anyone believe that the most evil wizard in a century 
was telling the truth?

Harry had just been attacked by dementors when he was taken to 
Grimmauld Place.  He needed an escort, and he needed to travel 
secretly.  After Christmas, his destination was not secret, and 
he had no immediate need of an escort.

Why is this a problem?  For all we know, lots of students take 
the bus..
