My attempt at how this pans out:
So, Snape's dad is a muggle - let's call him Bob Evans - Marries
Snape's mum - let's call her Jane Lestrange.
Jane is exiled from the family for marriage to Bob the Muggle. She
dies in childbirth while having young Perseus and his Father
abandons him (out of grief for Jane) to grow up in an orphanage.
Like Riddle, young Perseus changes his name out of disrespect for
his muggle father to anagram Severus Snape (denouncing all that is
muggle) - the Lestranges are non the wiser.
Meanwhile, Bob re-marries and had Lily and Petunia (some of Jane's
magic must have "rubbed off" on Bob though as he produces a magical
daughter)<snip> Whether or not he realises he is related to Lily
doesn't matter, the name "Evans" brings back all the hatred of what
his father did to him and so he hates her - calling her a "Filthy
MudBlood".
Later he finds out that he *is* in fact Lily's half brother (she
doesn't know, but he recognises her father from an old photo), so
not only does he have James to hate (for his mistreatment), but Lily
the mudblood too - this adds weight to his hatred of 1/2 nephew
Harry. Snape's "dead beat" muggle father goes on to produce (through
Lily) "The Famous Harry Potter" - Snape get's nothing and Harry gets
Fame.>

Me(Kirstini):
I really like the second half of this theory (extra non-EWWW reasons
for Snape to hate Harry). The trouble is that the first bit is
easily disproved by canon. Assuming the fairly logical fact that the
greasy-haired, hook-nosed man shouting at a woman and child in the
Pensieve is Snape's dad, it would mean that Snape knew his father
until about fourish, at least. Also, we know that Snape and Lily are
the same age, and Petunia has to be older than them, because Dudley
is about six months older than Harry, so Petunia would've been a
child bride (not very proper or correct) were she younger than Lily.
Finally, wouldn't Petunia mention the ultra-humiliation of being the
only child out of *three* who couldn't do magic in her little PS
rage against Lily?
I do like the idea that there are more Evanses lurking out there
somewhere, although I'm sure Dumbledore would know about the blood-
relative thing. The trouble with Mark Evans, for instance, is that
if he lives in the neighbourhood, wouldn't Petunia acknowledge an
(apparently non-magical) family as relatives?
