He  doesn't continuously hide behind his men, he goes out and attempts to kill 
people on his own.  If he was a coward he wouldn't do that.

Given that the DEs we've seen so far, with the possible exception of Bellatrix, 
behave more like the Three Stooges Meets Inspector Clouseau, that doesn't 
seem like courage so much as resigned necessity.

And again, we're talking about  a BABY. I'm  not going to praise his courage 
for attempting to snuff out a baby.
