Actually, from what Barty Crouch Jr says, he needed Moody alive because 
he wanted to be able to question Moody (through other means I suppose) 
[GoF; p689, US Ed]. I recall Hermione being able to use [cat] hair 
which she thought was from Millicent Bullstrode, and I suppose she had 
that for quite some time already (since the dueling event)?
