I think that they would know about golf simply because it's been 
around soooo long.  And the balls would be the right size.  They 
might even have found them someplace.  I don't think they use 
bewitched balls because of the fear of them getting away and muggles 
seeing this ball flying around without anyone steering it.  And they 
wouldn't be able to put a charm on it because it would require 
underage magic.

If I'm remembering correctly when they are at the burrow, they all 
use apples.  The golf balls are used at school.  And since so many 
muggleborns have gone through that door, someone at some point in 
time probably said, "Well why don't we just practice with this?" held 
up a golf ball and the tradition continues.
