  Namely REMUS LUPIN.

I was wondering if this had been covered before as my Archive Search
  didn't find anything.

Do we know who gave Remus his life altering bite?

Lupin(e) - is a word that I have always associated with the
  werewolf 'fraternity'.

Where I'm going with this is...

The surname Lupin seems to much of a coincidence for someone who just
happens to get bitten by a werewolf at a young age. Could the biter
have been a family member? Does he come from a long line of magical
persons with a tendency to bark at the full moon and go a bit funny
  once a month?

Just a question that struck me as I was cleaning out my Bunnies
(don't ask what the connection is, coz I have no idea!!!)

Not to mention, Karen, the first name "Remus"... Remus, brother of Romulus who, according to the legend, were raised by a female wolf and later on founded the city of Rome...

Naming that character Remus Lupin is a classic example of what I call "the wrong perspective". It fits so well with the fact that he's a werewolf... except that it shouldn't, because even if Mr and Mrs. Lupin thought it appropriate to name their son Remus because their surname was Lupin, it's just too much of a coincidence that, years later, the child happens to be bitten by a werewolf... Maybe JK overdid that one a little... Other such examples may be found. :o)
