For what it's worth, Karen, when I first read about that Howler going
off in Petunia's kitchen, I thought the phrase referred to
someone's "last words" -- maybe even Harry's mom's. Did someone
extract a promise from Petunia --on his or her deathbed-- that she'd
take care of Harry?

Even more intriguing: unless I misunderstood Dumbledore, he implied
that the knowledge of Harry's being protected from Voldemort as long
as he was in her care was sufficient to motivate Petunia to keep
him. I wonder -- she seems to loathe him --and everything he stands
for-- so much that she'd just as soon let him leave and be killed,
and her sister's memory be damned. I almost think there had to be
some kind of an implied threat to her, as well -- which brings us
back to that hypothetical deathbed scenario. Did a Wizard, with his
or her dying breath, place a charm [or would it be a curse?] on
Petunia that if she ever kicked Harry out, something horrible would
happen to her?
