roots was certainly dangerous.
JKR uses caricature in her works to great effect (Snape oozes evil
with his greasy black hair, Dumbledore, the wise wizard has a
flowing white beard as we expect, McGonagill, the "dried up"
spinster) Of course, she gives us the caricature, but then gives
them depth. (Snape's work with OoP, Dumbledore makes mistakes,
Mcgonagill has a sense of humor)

Hagrid is the perfect caricature of the big simple guy with the
heart of gold. Underline simple.

But then, we see his absolute loyalty to Dumbledore, his love for
his father, his tenderness with the children.

OK, he loves big creatures. He's a big guy. And he has a hard
time "sizing down" his interests to share them with the kids.

But I think Hagrid has a lot on the ball. Even though his wand was
broken at Hogwart's, and it's obvious to us it's his wand, but
apparently he's been using it ever since without getting caught. He
is accepted (up until his protection of Firenze) by the "creatures"
of the Dark Forest.

He has, in some cases, an acute understanding of human nature. It
was he who put together the photo album for Harry.

Sure, he has faults, and Harry and the gang all know it. But they
still love him, because he loves them. Unwaveringly.....

I think I'd have loved to have Hagrid as a teacher. And I know he's
brought a lot of aggravation... but what would you put up with for
absolute trust.

Dorothy
