The Cho crush is probably over.

The train ride into Hogwarts at the start of the year and the train ride
home at the end of the year shows the growth and maturing of all the parties
that shared the rides. The change in Ginny, Neville and Harry are obvious
and dramatic. Even Neville's mimbulus mimbletonia plant changed from a
totally defensive stinksap shooter to a more friendly crooner when touched
..... There were lots of contrasts that can be made between the two train
rides and the change in Harry's reactions upon seeing Cho under less than
perfect circumstances went from embarassment to indifference.

As an aside ..... did anyone notice that Luna was not mentioned as being on
the train ride home from Hogwarts???? Was she still at Hogwarts finding her
belongings, or what ? I thought that it was interesting that she is
mentioned as being on the homebound train in the Lexicon's brief chapter
summary for Chapter 38. I will post this as a separate thread ....

So what purposes did the Cho infatuation serve ?

First, it kept Harry occupied and unattached so that Harry would more easily
fall in love with his soulmate --- whoever that may be. If Harry had been
"involved" any time previously with Hermione then JKR would have some
difficulty unwinding that relationship since Hermione would be perceived as
Harry's Hogwart sweetheart and any new or developing character that
disturbed that relationship would cause hostility and discord (and
catfights) which would turn the story into a soap opera. It also would put
an end to any RH potential since Ron would not try to step in on his friend.

Second, it establishes that though Cho was pretty, she was sorted into
Ravenclaw which means that she must have some intelligence, even though I
didn't notice any evidence of it yet. This is also true of Luna - who on
first impression seems more ditsy than intelligent. Hermione, who seems more
intelligent than anyone in Ravenclaw, ended up in Griffindor because that
was the choice she expressed to the sorting hat. In other words, JKR
demonstrated that Harry has a potential attraction to the young ladies of
Ravenclaw and not just Griffindor. {Can you see Harry dating a Slitherin
girl or even a Hufflepuff? Naaaah ....}

We shall see what develops .......................
