Well, it could be that there was a hidden message for his father in
this jumper. If Percy has to write to his little brother at night and
in a coded way, maybe he's desperate for ways to contact his father.
I guess he could give him messages through DD if my theory is valid,
but maybe for whatever reason he had a very personal thing to say to
his dad, and he figured a returned gift wouldn't be scrutinized as
much as a normal post would be.
Another reason could simply be that it was just too hard for him to
have this jumper at home. Maybe he opened the present, dissolved into
tears, and realized he couldn't possibly keep it if he wanted to stay
strong.
Or maybe he over-did his act, and figured a resentful son would send
back anything his parents gave him. He IS risking his life in this
matter after all, he can't be too cautious.
