He likes DD because DD saved his skin more than once. But he doesn't
mind disobeying DD when he wants to : showing Harry and Madame Maxime
the dragons, hiding Grawp in the Forest, stuff like that.
His love for his father (or even for his mother, for that matter), I
can't deny.
His tenderness with the children ? Well, he's very choosy on that
one ! HRH, all right, but what about the others ? He doesn't seem to
care much that so many of his students get bitten, burned, scratched,
or whatever, during his lessons. I don't call that tenderness.

Nope : he has a hard time putting the kids' interests first.
Basically, he thinks that because he likes something, the kids will
too. He doesn't care about what THEY want or need, only about what HE
likes.

So much for obeying DD's orders...

As I see it, it's more a matter of "I'll let you do your business if
you let me do mine". The centaurs don't *accept* him, they merely
tolerate him. And also, he is the school's gamekeeper, so I guess
he's got some kind of "authority" on some creatures in the Forest.

This I admit : when he cares about someone, he goes to great lengths
to help them. He put together this album, he talks to the boys when
they are mad at Hermione and she's so sad, etc... And he brings back
his little half-brother because he is being mistreated...

> I think I'd have loved to have Hagrid as a teacher.

I wouldn't !!!! I would have been TERRIFIED !!! Each and every time,
I would have wondered what new monstruosity he was going to bring up
to class. You know, when Parvati and Lavender were so happy after
their first lesson with Pr Grubby-Plank, when they studied Unicorns
and they said this was what they thought a Care for Magical Creatures
lesson should be like, I COMPLETELY AGREED WITH THEM. I completely
understood them, and shared their relief and pleasure. I would take
Pr Grubby-Plank over Hagrid any day.

> And I know he's brought a lot of aggravation... but what would you
> put up with for absolute trust.

If you will remember, absolute trust is precisely what brought Harry
to make a most stupid and careless promise to Hagrid in OoP, one that
could have resulted in his and Hermione's death...
