Hello All,
I'm not sure whether or not this has been done yet, but I've put quite
a bit of effort in, and there are a couple of new 'discoveries' here
concerning names from the Black Tapestry in ootp, so here goes:
(All translations are from Latin)
1) Severus = strict, severe, stern, austere, grim, terrible.
*could not find anything resembling 'Snape'*
- Severus Snape anagrams to Perseus Evans - (as we all know)
Perseus "is the killer of Medusa, rescuer of Andromeda and the son of
Danae".
Andromeda was his wife. Danae was his mother. Medusa is a mythical
being, with snakes on its head that turns anything that looks at it to
stone (like the basilisk in COS).
So far Perseus Evans sounds pretty good! :-)
anyway - Evans - the closest to this in Latin is 'evanescoe' (yes, I
remember the spell that Snape used in ootp to clear Harry's cauldron)
and that is exactly what evanescoe means - 'to vanish, clear'.
I can see the theories now!!! ;-)

2)Andromeda Black (later Andromeda Tonks, Nymphdora Tonks' mother).
Was this woman ever previously married to a Perseus Evans??? Maybe he
vanished and she remarried a muggle by the name of Ted Tonks???
Hmmm...BTW, Andromeda is also a constellation.

*More on the 'Black's' from here on:
3) Sirius = 'Dog Star', another constellation.
4) Regulus (Sirius' brother) = petty king, prince *or* Roman consul
taken prisoner by the Carthagians
5) 'Phineas Nigellus' (my second favourite HP character, my favourite
is Snape). This was a difficult one as 'Phineas' is not a Latin word,
nor is it made up of any. 'Nigellus' is not a Latin word, but I have
made quite a coincidental discovery, which leads me to believe that it
isn't a coincidence. The beginning of the word 'Nigellus' is very
similar to the word 'niger', which means 'black, dark, dismal,
ill-omened.' Since Phineas Nigellus is Sirius Blacks great-great
grandfather, somewhere along the line their surname was translated
from Nigellus to Black - with the same meaning.
6) Nymphadora (Tonks) has no real meaning, though the word 'Nympha' in
Latin='bride'. Theories anyone?
7) Bellatrix Lestrange. Bellatrix='warrioress'. It's fitting!
8) Draco=dragon & *serpent*
9) Rabastan (Lestrange). Rabastan has no meaning though the similar
word 'Rabidus'='raving, mad'.

Now for the rest of the best!
10) Albus= white, bright.
11) Minerva = Goddess of wisdomand arts, *especially weaving*. Talent,
genius *working in wool*. There are too many references to wool,
woolen socks and woolen nightshirts in HP for this to be a coincidence.
12) Sinistra (Astronomy Professor) = left hand, left hand side.

I'm sure that there are many more, I for one am extremely interested,
and plan on uncovering them all.

so what do you all think?
