Question on Teachers - okay Transfiguration teachers in particular

I don't like to question the Lexicon here, but can this be right? 
Dumbledore was offered the postition of MoM, and Fudge took it when 
he turned it down. We know this from PS. Fudge wasn't going to get 
the job - everyone thought it would be Barty Crouch, but he lost 
public sympathy after his son was caught. But his son was caught in 
1983-4 approx, wasn't he? This would mean a discrepancy of 13-odd 
years in the Lexicon information. Have I got hold of the wrong end 
of the stick?
