This is entirely possible. All those court records may or may not be public
documents for anyone to read. It is also possible she has found in a book
somewhere exactly what it means when someone has greasy hair, sallow
skin and glittering black eyes.
She did get a major assist from Snape in figuring out the Lupin thing though.
But, since Lupin assigned a vampire essay as well...

Hermione also respects teachers who can teach her stuff. Trelawney and
Umbridge are the ones she's backtalked, but only because, in her eyes, they
are useless. (And she's not far wrong.) Only her personal friendship with
Hagrid keeps her from being more vocal about him. (And no matter what my
friend Jenny says, Hagrid IS improving.)
So, she could entirely be willing to put up with Snape because, damn it, he
knows stuff she wants to learn. But, the second he stops being useful to her,
he should watch his back.
I don't want to discuss fanfic. I had to take six showers just to get it out of my
head this morning.

You bring the lawn chairs. I'll bring the beer.
