I've long maintained that JKR is using delicate code-words for some of the
natural states of puberty.
Warning, there are some indelicate phrases ahead as I crack the code.
"Barking mad," Ron refers to Hermione at one point. Well, in my junior high
school, that would have been "on the rag."
As has been pointed out many times, Ron can eat for three people at this
point, a natural function of teenager-hood.
Harry's funny feeling in his "stomach" is simply him understanding that wood
comes from more places than his broomstick, if you get my drift.
And of course, we have the eternal teenager Snape, who spends his time at
the Yule Ball blasting apart bushes to get himself a peep show.
Pervert.
