Ginger replies:
We've had this discussion before OoP, and one school of thought is
that as this is Harry's POV, we only see Quiddich and the deuling
club as exrta-currics. With OoP, we now have canon that other things
exist. OoP p. 276 (US edition) Ron is made keeper, but Angelina
confides in Harry that 2 others were better. Vicky Frobisher wasn't
chosen as she is in "all sorts of Societies" and would choose Charms
Club over quiddich should they conflict. Educational decree #24 (OoP
p. 351) bans "Organizations, Societies, Teams, Groups and Clubs" (you
know the rest)
So they aren't taught, per se, but they are most likely there. Harry
just wouldn't be interested. It would be much more certain if we
were introduced to someone as, say, Terry Boot, accomplished
basoonist. Or if there were throwaway lines like "Seamus' nails were
still full of clay from his pottery class". But I think we can
figure that they are there somewhere given the divirsity of young
people in general and the willingness of teachers to organize out-of-
class lessons for those who find interest.
Maybe as a music-type person I'm just being overly optomistic,
Ginger, who thinks the Hufflepuff Wind Ensemble would be a good name
for a ... well, a wind ensemble.
personal P.S. -thanks to the Seargent-Majorette. I'm still laughing
over "Potterdamerung".
