And me:
SS (U.S. paperback), chapter 5, p. 80 *does* say:
Hagrid (darkly): "There's not a single witch or wizard
who went bad who wasn't in Slytherin. You-Know-Who was
one."
Harry: "Vol-, sorry, You-Know-Who was at Hogwarts?"
Hagrid: "Years an' years ago."
Now, I'm going to attach all sorts of qualifiers to
this :) Some may not call this definitive canon, given
Hagrid being, well, Hagrid (and being a tad LOONy
myself, I'm not even sure *I* do), but I think it
makes a good argument. Yes, Hagrid has a lot of
faults- he can be irresponsible, overzealous, and
there's the matter of his throwing that whole "all
dark wizards came from Slytherin" thing out there when
he still thought Sirius was guilty (er, staying away
from the MWPP house debate for now)- but, bottom line,
I don't think he's stupid. I think I'd remember the
name and house of someone who got me thrown out of
school. And Hagrid is close enough to Dumbledore that
I just can't imagine that he doesn't know Tom Riddle
is V-Mort. Not to mention the above quote; when Harry
asks if V-Mort went to Hogwarts, Hagrid speaks
*darkly* and says "years and years ago" instead of
simply "yes." He speaks like he knows what he's
talking about. (So, what's the verdict, Darrin, is
that enough canon? :)
And, although I may get flamed for this, Tom Riddle
*is* wearing a Slytherin symbol in the movie. No, I do
not generally accept the movie as canon, but can any
of you imagine JKR letting them get away with a
mistake like that? 'Cause somehow I can't.
Personally, I would love it if JKR threw us some
*major* curveball in this area, but I honestly don't
think we're going to see one.

-Personal 80's moment, said by my father yesterday:
"There is no parent alive who had a young child in the
80's that doesn't hate Care Bears. They were the
cartoon equivalent of sleeping pills; they should have
come with a warning label." ;P (Personally, I loved
'em, but then I *was* the young kid in the'80's.)
