Professor Binns = dead = no food, no lodging, no salary, never gets
tired, never gets old, is never demanding, never causes problems for
the administration. He's the ideal teacher. Isn't that what most
school administrations really want, dead, lifeless, undemanding teachers?
Besides, exactly how do you go about firing someone who is dead?

I agree, both Fluffy and the Monster Book of Monsters gave Hagrid a
chance to explain to the students the secret to handling all animals.
The secret is to figure out what calms them. Music calms Fluffy, a
gentle stroke along the spine calms the Monster book. This could have
given him the perfect lead-in to the rest of the creature he would
present.
As far as Hagrid being a teacher, I don't think he really understands
what he is suppose to do as a teacher. He really doesn't get it, but
he is starting to get it. He is getting better. He did a very
reasonable job in this last book because it was important to Harry's
OWL tests.
At first as a teacher, he thinks it will be cool to impress the
students with ...well impressive monsters. In his mind, he is teaching
'Magical Creatures', but it is beginning to occur to him that he is
suppose to be teaching 'CARE of Magical Creatures'. I've been waiting
for ages for Hermione to sit him down and explain this distinction.
Unfortunately, it hasn't happened, but like I said, he does seem to be
figuring out on his own. But I still think Hermione should explain it
to him. He obviously has the knowledge and ability to care for magical
creatures, all he has to do is pass the knowledge along.
Just a thought.
