I agree completely with this. I don't think there is a way for JKR to
have Snape surviving the end of book 7. After reading OotP I got the
impression that he has become a little too complex to ever find peace
or forgiveness , least with himself. Let's face it : With Snape's
behaviour during the Occlumency lessons and those memories Harry got
a glimpse into , Rowling painted the portrait of a highly disturbed
person. Whatever made him the way he is , it must have been truly
awful and I am sure there is more behind this than just a messed up
childhood and some bullying at school. We still don't know what made
him join Voldemort but since JKR wanted us to know that Snape "isn't
too nice" , I assume that he was a killer as were all the other DEs.
Maybe he enjoyed it , maybe he didn't - there's only one thing we
know for sure : Something must have happened to him which made him go
back to Dumbledore.
Still Snape's not able to get over his past. I believe that's what
Dumbledore is talking about when he tells Harry that "some wounds run
to deep for the healing". At this point , the headmaster probably
recognizes for himself that he can't really help Snape , no matter
how much he trusts him .
It has probably become almost impossible to break through the walls
Snape has put up around himself .He behaves perfectly like someone
who doesn't want anyone to get near him. I think even his greasy
hair, the yellow teeth , the unhealthy complexion and the black
clothes may work as evidence for that.
All this may have already started when he was a teenager (for
whatever reasons ) and maybe back then it would have been still
possible to help him - yet nobody seemed to have recognized the boy's
problems and therefore couldn't prevent him from becoming the cruel ,
sarcastic man he is at present.
To be honest , I don't see how JKR could redeem him completely or
make him a happy person again without killing him. I would even go as
far as to say that death is probably the one thing Severus Snape is
longing for , yet stays alive because he feels he has to make up for
the sins of the past.
Sympa (who is probably one of the very few Snape fans who'd love to
see him die)
