I think that JKR will use the mirror as a way to turn the idea of the 
utility of gifts on its head.  We've always seen in the past how 
gifts can suddenly become very important to Harry in solving a 
particular problem.  I think that, this time, the mirror gift will 
never work as orignally intended. It's been broken and I think JKR 
will leave it broken as a symbol of mistakes that people make, and 
thatn, once you've chosen your course, you very often can't go back 
again.
