I think though that we get a bit of clue near the beginning of OoP 
that there are more fifth year boys than are in Harry's dorm. When 
Seamus is telling about his problems with his mother over the 
holidays (because she didn't want Seamus to be sharing a room with 
Harry), Harry says to him, 

"If you've got a problem sharing a dormitory with me, go and ask 
McGonnagall if you can be moved ... stop your Mummy worrying -". 

I would imagine that students of the same year would be roomed 
together, everything else (except Quiddich & DA) seems to set up that 
the separate years stay separate. There is very little intereaction 
between grades anyway... so it makes sense, to me anyway, that if 
Seamus was going to be changing rooms then he would be moving in with 
other 5th years.
