First of all hello I'm Jasmine, who has tried to keep away from HP4GU because
it could well become addictive reading but has lost out to the urge to join
and is now enjoying reading lots of debating posts! :)

JKR has stated that approximately 1000 are in the school.

We know there are 5 gryffindor boys in Harry's year. We know of a definite 3
in Slytherin (after all there is still that ongoing debate about Blaise
Zabini's sex -I think he is male, Blaise being a french male name) we know for
definite that there are 3 girls in Hermiones Dorm, herself Parvati and Lavender.
However there is not mention of other girls.

I think though that there is an average of 4 student per dormitory, therefore
8 students in each year of one house, so 32 students in a year, times this up
by seven and we only have 224 students (please tell me my maths is correct)

Now this seems to be a phenomenally lower than what JKR is suggesting, it is
less than a quarter of her stated figure. Now yes, we can account for staff,
but surely this wouldn't take the figure above 300 at an absolute maximum!

So...does this mean when put on the spot an asked the question this was one
thing that JKR had not actually worked out, the number of students that is, and
1000 is a lovely easy number just to spout off but could actually be
extremely inaccurate? or was Harryjust born in a year where very few witches and
wizards were born? This is possible as it would appear that few were born around
July according to Trelawny's prophecy, and generally in a school year there
would be more than 2 children born in the same month.

Anyhow just my little ramble on the subject

Jasmine
xx
