The adults in Harry's life do seem rather unsympathetic. But, they've never
really been all that "there" for him.
When Harry first arrives at HQ, none of them have seen them since the events
in the graveyard. He was basically sent home still in shock and not one
even asks how he is. Mrs. Weasley comments that he's not looking well, but
that's it. We know from Dudley that Harry has been having some vocal
nightmares. I'm assuming Vernon and Petunia just ignored it, but you'd
think somebody at Grimmauld place might pay attention! Even at school,
whenever he first sees Cho, the thoughts in his head on two or three
occasions are "She doesn't hate me for being alive!" and when R&H bring up
Harry teaching DADA, he doesn't really freak until they bring up the
graveyard and he brings up Cedric. I think Harry has some major survivor
guilt going on.
When Moody shows him that photo and Harry leaves the room, he feels like
Moody's eye follows him, so he must have realized Harry was upset. He,
Sirius, and Lupin follow him to the drawing room where they deal with the
boggart. It was Sirius who had distracted Moody from Harry in the kitchen,
so I'm guessing he knew that photo might have upset Harry (or why were they
all following him?) but nothing is ever said and Harry just goes to bed.
The scene at Christmas in the pantry, after Mrs. Weasley comes home and
tells them Mr. Weasley is going to be all right, really made me angry at
Sirius. Harry went to him, confused and in a panic over his dream and
Sirius really brushed him off. Later, we find out Sirius did tell DD and
that Sirius probably knew more about the prophesy than he wanted to let on
to Harry. But still, Harry didn't know that. I didn't know that when I
read the scene and I couldn't figure out why Sirius just left him standing
there, obviously not feeling any more calm about the situation. He sent him
up to bed where Harry purposely kept himself awake and uncomfortable because
he was afraid to go to sleep.
On the train ride home from the hospital, Mrs. Weasley comments on how pale
Harry is and asks him if he's ill. She sends him to bed when they get home.
He doesn't come down for over 24 hours and eats nothing that whole time. If
she had suspected he was ill, wouldn't she have at least gone to check on
him? Knowing he was upset the previous day, wouldn't Sirius gone up to see
that he was okay? It strikes me as so odd!
At the end, after DDs speech and revelation, what happened? Did he just
send Harry back to the dorm to go to sleep? A whole week goes by and they
never talk again? No one even asks how he's doing? He didn't show up at
the feast, did anyone check on him? I mean, the kid has basically been
orphaned (for the second time!) and not one of them even asks how he's doing
or offers a word of comfort.
I'm hoping that book 6 will go back there and over the summer he'll get a
lot of support, but with their track record, I'm not holding my breath.
