Yes, but Hagrid couldn't have known this. During their first meeting
Grawp nearly killed Hermione, and Aragog's breed nearly ate Harry and
Ron. Hagrid is also IMO entirely responsible for Buckbeaks attack on
Draco. Yes, I know Draco is a brat and he provoked Buckbeak, but
every grown-up should know that in a class of 13 years old kids is
always someone who doesn't behave. He never should have shown the
Hippogriffs to the class. Even worse IMO were the blast ended
screwts. The scene, in which the whole class was burnt by those
beasts and Hagrid was happy because the screwts seemed to enjoy it,
annoyed me deeply. I liked Hagrid in the beginning, and I still think
he has a good heart and is probably a good gamekeeper, but he is a
horrible teacher. If I were a parent of one of those kids, I would
try everything, that my child wouldn't have to go to Hagrid's lessons
anymore. I was actually delighted in book 5, that there are enough
students who didn't like his lessons, and that even the totally
biased Harry admitted secretly, that those students have a point.
That makes me hope, that JKR is not particularly impressed by his
teaching skills either. If he wants to take care for all of those
monsters, it is okay for me (and I even accept the giant to a certain
degree), but I will never forgive Hagrid, that he put those children
in danger again and again again.
