Yes, but Hagrid couldn't have known this. During their first meeting 
Grawp nearly killed Hermione, and Aragog's breed nearly ate Harry and 
Ron. Hagrid is also IMO entirely responsible for Buckbeaks attack on 
Draco. Yes, I know Draco is a brat and he provoked Buckbeak, but 
every grown-up should know that in a class of 13 years old kids is 
always someone who doesn't behave. He never should have shown the 
Hippogriffs to the class. Even worse IMO were the blast ended 
screwts. The scene, in which the whole class was burnt by those 
beasts and Hagrid was happy because the screwts seemed to enjoy it, 
annoyed me deeply. I liked Hagrid in the beginning, and I still think 
he has a good heart and is probably a good gamekeeper, but he is a 
horrible teacher. If I were a parent of one of those kids, I would 
try everything, that my child wouldn't have to go to Hagrid's lessons 
anymore. I was actually delighted in book 5, that there are enough 
students who didn't like his lessons, and that even the totally 
biased Harry admitted secretly, that those students have a point. 
That makes me hope, that JKR is not particularly impressed by his 
teaching skills either. If he wants to take care for all of those 
monsters, it is okay for me (and I even accept the giant to a certain 
degree), but I will never forgive Hagrid, that he put those children 
in danger again and again again.
