I have to disagree with you on this point.  Hagrid knows Thestrals.  
He knows his subject very well.  I doubt there are many wizards in 
the world that know magical creatures better than Hagrid.

That said, I agree that Hagrid is not a very good teacher.  He does 
fine when the students behave and listen.  However students don't 
always behave and Umbridge is deliberately trying to undermind him.  
If he can learn to handle this, I think he'll do fine, but I doubt 
he'll learn to handle it.

I don't think his classes are anymore dangerous than some of the 
other classes at Hogwarts.
