I don't expect a completely happy ending either, but I think I heard JKR say 
somewhere that she's writing an epilogue to tell us what happens to everyone after 
they leave school. And I think that in a way, that will make a happy ending... not like 
"happily ever after" probably, but I'm sure it will mean some kind of closure and that 
we'll know how everyone dealt with the lost ones.
