I'm sorry if someone's already said this - but I'm a bit confused.  
In PS, when Hagrid first met Harry he told him his parents had 
beenhead boy and girl of Hogwarts in their time - so obviously, James 
must either have become a prefect later, or gone directly to be head 
boy.  Has JKR forgotten she worte this?  I doubt it - everything 
means something...
